General details:
Metal structure that spans some 44 feet (80 meters) above the bottom of a spectacular canyon of Manatuabon river in Barrio Hato Viejo in the Municipality of Ciales, Puerto Rico. This river runs along the vertical walls of the canyon.
Construction:
It was transferred to Carolina and was located on the banks of the Rio Grande de Loiza. Because he could not adapt in his initial destination, he was later mobilized to his current location in Ciales. Its installation began in 1904 and its construction finished one year later in 1905 and is recognized as a point of interest in the National Register of Historic Places. Its construction is dedicated to Don Juan José Jiménez, superintendent of Insular Public Works, who directed the construction.
Present:
This bridge is recognized as a point of interest on the National Register of Historic Places and is traversed and accessible to the public every day. The Mataplátano Bridge has become a symbolic icon of our town.
